Fougère
A branching structure that resolves into a fern only from underneath.
Fougère is the newest pattern and the first drawn on a computer, then thrown away and redrawn by hand because the computed version branched too regularly. Real ferns hesitate. The final pattern has four false starts in it — stubs that branch and stop.
Sixty-one glass fronds, each pressed in a graphite mould while still soft and then flame-polished at the tip. The press marks are left visible on the underside, which is the side nobody sees, and hidden on top, which is the side everybody photographs. This is the correct way round and we will not be changing it.
It is the only piece the atelier makes that can be extended after delivery. The spine accepts additional branches at any of nine points.
Made for
Long tables, hotel lobbies, and asymmetric rooms that resist a centred fitting.
